From an hourly wage to a yearly salary
A job ad gives an hourly rate, your rent is monthly and a loan application asks for your yearly income. The calculator converts one into the others. Type what you earn, choose the period you are paid by (an hour, a day, a week, a month or a year), then your hours and days per week. Every other period appears at once. The figures are gross pay: before taxes, National Insurance or any other deduction.
The method
- Per week: hourly rate × hours per week.
- Per year: weekly pay × 52.
- Per month: yearly pay ÷ 12, which is the same as hours per week × 52 ÷ 12 hours a month.
- Per day: weekly pay ÷ days per week.
The monthly figure uses an average month: 52 weeks divided by 12. On 40 hours a week, that is 173.33 hours a month; on 37.5 hours, 162.5 hours. Some months have more working days than others, so a monthly salary is an average, not the pay for a given calendar month.
Examples
- $15 an hour, 40 hours a week: $600 a week, $2,600 a month and $31,200 a year.
- $25 an hour, full time: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $52,000 a year. The reverse also holds: a $52,000 salary is $25 an hour.
- £18.50 an hour, 37.5 hours a week (a common full-time week in the UK): £693.75 a week, £3,006.25 a month and £36,075 a year.
- A yearly salary of $30,000 on 37.5 hours a week: 37.5 × 52 = 1,950 hours, so about $15.38 an hour.
The 2,080-hour rule
In the US, a full-time year is often counted as 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). A quick mental shortcut follows: double the hourly rate and add three zeros for a rough yearly salary ($20 an hour is about $40,000; the exact figure is $41,600). For the precise number, use the calculator.
Things to keep in mind
- Paid time off. The calculation counts 52 paid weeks. If your vacation or holidays are unpaid, as with many hourly jobs or contracts, your real yearly pay is lower: reduce your hours, or work out the weeks you will actually be paid.
- Overtime, tips and bonuses are not included. Add your average extra hours to the weekly hours for a rough idea.
- Before tax. These are gross amounts. For an estimate of your salary after Income Tax and National Insurance in the UK, use the UK take-home pay calculator.
- Day rates. Freelancers and contractors often quote a day rate. Choose “a day” and set the days per week to see the hourly, monthly and yearly equivalents.
Quick reference, full time
On 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, before tax:
| Per hour | Per month | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| $15 | $2,600 | $31,200 |
| $20 | $3,466.67 | $41,600 |
| $25 | $4,333.33 | $52,000 |
| $30 | $5,200 | $62,400 |
| $40 | $6,933.33 | $83,200 |
Part-time work
Type your real hours. At $18 an hour for 20 hours a week, you earn $360 a week, $1,560 a month and $18,720 a year. Change the days per week to see your daily pay: on 4 days, $90 a day.
Comparing two job offers
One offer pays $22 an hour, another $45,000 a year. Type each one with the hours it involves: the hourly offer on 40 hours comes to $45,760 a year, slightly more, but check paid time off and benefits before deciding. To see the gap between two figures as a percentage, the percentage calculator gives it in one line.
Currency, in the bottom bar, switches the symbol between $, £, €, C$ and A$; the calculation is the same in every country, since no tax rule is involved.
